First attested as oldebert in 1479. Compound of Old Frisian ald (old) and bert (settlement). The initial T- is the result of the preposition te (at) being contracted into the toponym. The element ald was added to distinguish the settlement from Niebert. Compare Taarlo, Tinallinge and Tubbergen.
