Etymology

First attested as arlo in 820. Compound of Old Dutch *are (maple) and lo (light forest). The initial T- derives from a contraction of the preposition te (at) into the word. Compare Aarle, Aarle-Rixtel, Ten Arlo and Tynaarlo.
