Etymology

Attested as Tien gemeten in 1639. Compound of tien (ten) and the plural form of gemet (a unit of land measurement roughly equivalent to 0.4 hectares). Compare Duizend Morgen, Honderd en Tien Morgen, Twaalfmorgen and Zevenmorgen.

The hamlet is named after the island.
