Converting to trad/simp with {{zh-l}}

@Wyang Hi, Frank. Is it possible to do the trick with {{zh-l}} as well, as with 在 (zài), where the forms are mostly simplified? I get results like 在劫難逃#Chinese／在劫難逃／在劫难逃#Chinese (在劫难逃). --Anatoli T. ^{(обсудить}/^вклад) 23:18, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Categorization

@Wyang: hello. I'm not sure this template belongs in the Category:Foreign derivation templates, which IMO should only consist of etymology templates using two language codes: the target language and the source language. ({{zh-psm}} does belong here however, although I'd prefer to make it a cross-language template: {{psm|zh|en|xxx}}). --Barytonesis (talk) 10:56, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

Organized by...radical? (Is the equivalent of alphabetizing needed?)

I want to add 齐膝 (see this Yabla entry for definitions, &c.) to a compounds list that uses this template, but I hesitate to just throw the term at the end of the list.

I think that the template's documentation should state:

1. if compounds need to be manually organized when using this template or if the template does that itself in the rendered page,
2. if manual organization is needed, the method to use in doing so (e.g., by radical, by pronunciation), and
3. for those editors who add compounds in a language with which they only have a passing familiarity, how to find information on using that organization method accurately.

It also would be good to link to instructions on setting up a Chinese-language entry.

Sorry that I can only post this, but my real-life limitations don't always allow me to revisit an edit I want to make, so I have to do a data dump at the time. I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to follow through on adding the compound to the applicable entries.

Mark important words for learners

Single-character entries often have huge lists of compounds. @Suzukaze-c: HSK words are marked with {{zh-cat|Beginning}} etc., so we can fetch that information along with pinyin. Little memory overhead if getContent() is memoized.

On the other hand, we don't use homonym numbers in page titles, so 小說／小说 (xiǎoyuè) may be erroneously marked as "Elementary" which really belongs to 小說／小说 (xiǎoshuō). Fetching from lemma entries probably isn't a good idea. --Nyarukoseijin (talk) 02:36, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Template:zh-der#Features: colons versus semi-colons

Hey friends, I was adding one-word English definitions to the zh-der of 甲 (jiǎ), and I noticed that colons and semi-colons have different effects. I used a colon in one case and a semi-colon in another case- see 甲仙 and 學甲 in the zh-der box. My questions: (1) which should I use, semi-colon or colon? (2) can some guidance be added to Template:zh-der#Features on the varying uses of semi-colon and colon? Sorting

There are now 35 Chinese character entries in CAT:E with time and/or memory errors that weren't there yesterday, and your edit to Module:zh/templates is the prime candidate for the cause. Is there any way to do the same thing using fewer resources? Adding 下 to {{redlink category}} was not enough to fix the 下 page, so it has to be a fairly substantial increase in memory usage. Does Unicode codepoint ordering make sense for Chinese? If not, the alphabetization should just be disabled. — SURJECTION ^{/ T / C / L /} 20:01, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

I think disabling alphabetisation makes most sense, given it will default to the Unicode sort order won't it? It would be good to avoid the current situation where SMP and TMP characters are arbitrarily ordered before any BMP characters, as that means the top of derivation lists are more likely to get cluttered with extremely obscure terms. Something must have worked- I did a handful of null edits, and the only thing left in CAT:E is Module:zh-dial-syn/check-presence/documentation, which will probably still be there when the Sun collapses into a singularity a few billion years from now... Chuck Entz (talk) 04:02, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

@Theknightwho: Alphabetization just means sorting here, so with it turned off, if the words aren't sorted in the template parameters, they won't be sorted in the output of the template. Module:columns/old had a bug though. It used broken comparison of non-BMP characters in the sorting function if you omitted a language object. I fixed it so it always sorts non-BMP characters correctly. So now, with sorting turned on, with a zh language object there will be radical-stroke sortkeys and without a language object there will be code point sorting. I'm going to change the sorting argument back to true because it sounds like the latter is what you wanted. Hopefully it won't cause memory errors. — Eru·tuon 18:54, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
