Is this redundant to {{ordinal to word}}, or has it been created to avoid or reduce errors in some entries? — SGconlaw (talk) 16:49, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

The latter. {{Latn-def-lite}} relies on it, and without that A will have Lua memory errors. Compare the edit before using Latn-def-lite and the one after. 70.172.194.25 09:14, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@70.172.194.25: I see. In that case could you please mention this on the template’s documentation page? Is the avoidance of memory errors also the reason for the creation of a subpage for this reference template? Just wondering. — SGconlaw (talk) 12:19, 12 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
User:Sgconlaw: Sorry for the late response, I did not see this until now. I'll try to get around to making a documentation page. :)
That template subpage has nothing to do with memory. The issue I was trying to solve was that previously the template did not provide a page link. The URL differs depending on whether the first volume or second volume is being linked to. There was already code for detecting the volume from the entry title, which was previously only used for the |volume= parameter, so I thought moving that out to a subpage and calling from both |volume= and |pageurl= would be cleaner. It could be done without a subpage, but it would involve repeating the same switching and string processing code. 70.172.194.25 07:09, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@70.172.194.25: thanks, a documentation page would be useful. Regarding the template subpage, personally I'm not sure it saves much code to split the template between the main page and the subpage. — SGconlaw (talk) 13:36, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Here is what the template would look like with repeating the code: [1]. I personally prefer reducing redundancy, but if you prefer this way, I'm happy to keep it like this. The most important thing is just that it works right. And I added a documentation subpage for {{ordinal to word-lite}}. 70.172.194.25 16:57, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@70.172.194.25: thanks. I think it would make editing of that template more straightforward. — SGconlaw (talk) 19:46, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
