@Mårtensås, Ofkosinn some of us are currently doing a sweep of Wiktionary's inflection tables to modernise and update their look. This template is one of a number of inflection tables that looks poor in Wiktionary's new dark mode, and also exhibits a fixed width, so that there is excessive space in the inflection table of short words.

It occurred to me that, instead of solving these issues using the existing layout, it might be possible to present Old Norse verb conjugations in a more compact manner, following the model of some of the West Germanic lects (e.g. Saterland Frisian and Bavarian).

This could be achieved by placing the subjunctive alongside the indicative. Here's an example using the {{inflection-table-top}} template that's used in other Old Norse templates as well as the above two linked examples:

Conjugation of drekka — active (strong class 3)
infinitive drekka
present participle drekkandi
past participle drukkinn
indicative subjunctive
present past present past
1st person singular drekk drakk drekka drykka
2nd person singular drekkr drakkt drekkir drykkir
3rd person singular drekkr drakk drekki drykki
1st person plural drekkum drukkum drekkim drykkim
2nd person plural drekkið drukkuð drekkið drykkið
3rd person plural drekka drukku drekki drykki
imperative present
2nd person singular drekk
1st person plural drekkum
2nd person plural drekkið
Conjugation of drekka — mediopassive (strong class 3)
infinitive drekkask
present participle drekkandisk
past participle drukkizk
indicative subjunctive
present past present past
1st person singular drekkumk drukkumk drekkumk drykkumk
2nd person singular drekksk drakkzk drekkisk drykkisk
3rd person singular drekksk drakksk drekkisk drykkisk
1st person plural drekkumsk drukkumsk drekkimsk drykkimsk
2nd person plural drekkizk drukkuzk drekkizk drykkizk
3rd person plural drekkask drukkusk drekkisk drykkisk
imperative present
2nd person singular drekksk
1st person plural drekkumsk
2nd person plural drekkizk

As you can see, the table presents the same information in a more compact manner, using slightly less "vertical scroll space" on the page. The appearance lacks the vertically cramped yet horizontally overly-spaced look of the current template.

A similar layout would likely work for Icelandic and (potentially) German verb tables as well.

I'd be keen to hear any feedback on this layout. This, that and the other (talk) 08:29, 26 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

I support standardisation of templates, especially in closely related languages. The layout looks good, but there's a fair bit of grey space on the right hand side. Don't know if this would be possible to get rid of. ᛙᛆᚱᛐᛁᚿᛌᛆᛌProto-NorsingAsk me anything 15:17, 26 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Mårtensås thanks for your support. Unfortunately I can't see any obvious way to rearrange the template to fill the space; do you have any ideas? For the infinitive and participles, you could stretch their cells to fill the entire width of the box. I personally feel that this tends to draw the term too far away from its descriptive header, but do you think it would look better? This, that and the other (talk) 07:01, 27 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
