Indeclinable but comparable adjectives

[edit]

@Benwing2: what do we do about adjectives like секси, which have comparatives and superlatives, but are otherwise indeclinable? For nouns, passing no <> in the argument gives just an undeclined term in all slots, but currently this template crashes, and the same behaviour therefore doesn't work. There's nothing complicated about removing the table and writing, e.g.: "This term is indeclinable, but has comparative по-секси and superlative най-секси.", but it would be nice to preserve the same table format for all declension sections. Also, should the headword have "indecl=1" passed in, or do the comparatives and superlative count as declensions? Kiril kovachev (talkcontribs) 18:07, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Kiril kovachev Hmm. By indeclinable do you mean it doesn't take definite endings either? Usually in such cases we just remove the table and put a message indicating that the term is indeclinable, as you have done. But if you prefer, I think with a one or two line fix I can make it handle such cases and display an undeclined table. The headword IMO should say "indeclinable, comparative по-се́кси, superlative най-се́кси" or similar, by specifying something like {{bg-adj|се́кси|indecl=1|comp=+}}; this is how other such headwords work. @Benwing2 That's right, it doesn't take definite endings, only ever used in its dictionary form, or of course in the comparative or superlative forms. That said, the headword solution is perfect, I think, and so we may as well not have the table at all since it doesn't say anything new besides what's already stated in the headline. I would be much grateful if you could make that |comp= param a reality, that'd be a big help. Kiril kovachev (talkcontribs) 20:57, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Kiril kovachev I rewrote Module:bg-headword to bring it up to modern standards, and implemented comparative/superlatives for adjectives in the process. You can write {{bg-adj|се́кси|indecl=1|comp=+}} or {{bg-adj|се́кси|indecl=1|+}} since |2= is an alias of |comp= (and |3= is an alias of |sup=). Default for adjectives and adverbs is (now) to make no assumptions about whether a comparative or superlative is present. Use |comp=+ or |2=+ to request a default comparative (which in the process requests a default superlative, unless you write |sup=- or |3=-) and add the entry to Category:Bulgarian comparable adjectives (or similar for adverbs). Use |comp=- or |2=- to indicate an uncomparable adjective/adverb and add the entry to Category:Bulgarian uncomparable adjectives (or similar for adverbs) (although you can also write e.g. {{bg-adj|се́кси|indecl=1|-|comp2=+}} which indicates that the adjective can be both comparable and uncomparable in different meainings; it displays sometimes comparable and adds the page to both Category:Bulgarian comparable adjectives and Category:Bulgarian uncomparable adjectives). @Benwing2 Wow, thank you so much! That's an excellent improvement, I'm sure it took some good effort to accomplish that, so many thanks. This'll be of good use in words like these in the future. I transformed секси (seksi) to the new format and it works great. Kiril kovachev (talkcontribs) 11:06, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
