Template:sa-root/documentation
Appearance
Usage
[edit]This template can be used:
- either in etymologies of terms derived from a root
- or as a headword-template for Sanskrit roots.
Parameters
[edit]For using as an etymological template
[edit]|1=
- The root from which a term derived. This would also categorise the term by its root. For example:
{{sa-root|ग्लै}}
gives:- From the root ग्लै (glai)
- and categorises into Category:Sanskrit terms belonging to the root ग्लै
|2=
(optional)- The suffix attached to the root for forming the term. For example:
{{sa-root|क्षुभ्|त}}
gives:- From the root क्षुभ् (kṣubh) + -त (-ta)
- and categorises into Category:Sanskrit terms belonging to the root क्षुभ् and Category:Sanskrit terms suffixed with -त
|notext=
(optional)- Used for suppressing the text "From the root […] ". Categorisation will not be suppressed. If this parameter is used, the term "root" appears beside the root in brackets. For example:
|sr=
(optional)- For using the text "The Sanskrit root is […] " instead of "From the root […] ". To be used when the term is inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan, Proto-Indo-Iranian, or Proto-Indo-European, but derivation from a root is also possible. Categorisation will not be suppressed. For example:
|sa=
(optional)- For using the text "Synchronically analysable as […] " instead of "From the root […] ". To be used in place of
|sr=
only if the term can be from a root + suffix. This adds the term "root" in brackets. Categorisation (by root and suffix) will not be suppressed. For example:{{sa-root|तुष्|ति|sa=1}}
gives:- By surface analysis, तुष् (tuṣ, root) + -ति (-ti)
|nocap=
(optional)- Used for suppressing capitalisation of the first letter. Categorisation will not be suppressed. For example:
|t=
(optional)- For giving a short English translation of the root. For example:
{{sa-root|क्षुभ्|त|t=to shake, tremble, be agitated or disturbed}}
gives:- From the root क्षुभ् (kṣubh, “to shake, tremble, be agitated or disturbed”) + -त (-ta)
{{sa-root|तुष्|ति|sa=1|t=to be satisfied}}
gives:- By surface analysis, तुष् (tuṣ, “to be satisfied”, root) + -ति (-ti)
{{sa-root|भक्ष्|sr=1|t=to eat or drink}}
gives:- The Sanskrit root is भक्ष् (bhakṣ, “to eat or drink”)
|t2=
(optional)- For giving a short English translation of the suffix. For example:
For using as a headword-line template
[edit]|head=
- The headword parameter. By default, it is the page's title.
|tr=
- The transliteration. Only to be used when automatic transliteration is incorrect.
|sc=
- Script code. Rarely needs to be given, as the script is normally autodetected.
Note: If this template has to be used as a headword-line template, the parameter |1=
(the first unnamed parameter) must not be specified. If it is specified, the template would work as an etymology-template and add the terms to wrong categories. For an example, see this revision of दिव्.
