Usage
[edit]Transliterations
[edit]Automatic transliterations can be overriden by putting the transliteration/transcription after the synonym, separated by a colon:
["Seoul"] = { "WORD/TR" },
Notes
[edit]Notes can be indicated for a synonym by putting the note after the synonym, separated by a colon:
["Seoul"] = { "WORD:NOTE" },
If a note is recurring, symbols can be used, and a key can be indicated in the note
entry.
To-do
[edit]- Transliterations should automatically merge certain vowels (currently have to be done by hand, if done at all):
- Done ㅐ (ae) and ㅔ (e) should both be transliterated as e in:
- 1) modern colloquial Seoul
- 2) all of Gyeongsang except Jinju, Sancheong, Hamyang, Namhae, Hadong, Sacheon, Goseong, Tongyeong (see 산청지역어의 음소체계 연구)
- 3) Samcheok. Traditionally, Jeongseon did not merge these vowels (1) but Samcheok did (2).
- 4) Gochang in N. Jeolla and most of S. Jeolla except Gurye, Gwangyang, Goheung, Boseong, (probably Suncheon as well but couldnt find a source)
- Done ㅓ (eo) and ㅡ (eu) should both be transliterated as eu in all of Gyeongsang except:
- in parts of northern Gyeongsang transitional with Gangwon: Uljin and Bonghwa for sure, less clear further south (seems to have been reversed under Seoul influence before the merger could be completed?)
- in Hamyang (but not anywhere else in S. Gyeongsang)
- Modern Pyongan speakers (inc. speakers of 문화어) have merged ㅓ (eo) and ㅗ (o) to o, ㅡ (eu) and ㅜ (u) to u, but this is not characteristic of traditional Pyongyang speech or formal 문화어—do we need a "modern colloquial Pyongyang"? But data on this would be hard to find.
- Done ㅐ (ae) and ㅔ (e) should both be transliterated as e in:
- Done Vowel length: 말: should automatically produce the transliteration maːl
- Tentatively implemented with the symbol
@
, as the colon is already in use -- 08:52, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
- Tentatively implemented with the symbol
- Done Nasalization: Gyeongsang, Yeongdong, Hwanghae, and the two northern varieties
- 하~ should be transliterated as hã and transformed into 항
- not in closed syllables
- Gyeongsang needs automatic transliteration
Some thoughts
[edit]- Proper marking of pitch? Probably best to use surface realizations (so two pitch levels for southern Gyeongsang and most of Hamgyong, three for the Gilju area, two pitch levels + vowel length marking for northern Gyeongsang) instead of trying to analyze the underlying accentual pattern
