Template:foreign name/documentation

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary
Documentation for Template:foreign name. [edit]
This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

This template is used in definitions for foreign names, especially but not necessary names of well-known people. This may be used, for example, to create an Italian entry for English-language names like Clinton, Bush or Blair, or an English entry for Polish-language names like Wałęsa. Most commonly this is used when the script of the source-language and destination-language names are the same and no significant phonetic respelling has been applied. (The source and destination names need not be identical; e.g. Polish Wałęsa is often rendered as English Walesa, without the accent marks.)

Parameters

[edit]

Parameters are identical to those of {{name translit}}. See there for more information.

Examples

[edit]

On the Italian page Clinton:

{{foreign name|it|en|type=surname}} produces

A surname in English

and categorizes the page into Category:Italian renderings of English surnames.

On the English page Walesa:

{{foreign name|en|pl|Wałęsa|type=surname}} produces

A surname in Polish, Wałęsa

and categorizes the page into Category:English renderings of Polish surnames.

Note how in this latter case the source name is specified explicitly since it is not the same as the destination name (which has had the accents removed).

On the Italian page Socrate:

{{foreign name|it|grc|Σωκράτης|type=male given name}} produces

A male given name in Ancient Greek, Σωκράτης (Sōkrátēs)

and categorizes the page into Category:Italian renderings of Ancient Greek male given names.

Note here that {{name translit}} could also be used, but arguably Socrate is not a very good transliteration of the source Greek name since it lacks the final -s.
