Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Thomas Otway's work The Souldiers Fortune: A Comedy (1st edition, 1681). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Epilogue Epilogue
Dedication The Dedication (to the publisher R. Bentley)
Prologue Prologue, by the Lord Falkland (i.e., Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount Falkland)
As the dedication is unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=zcZjAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP13, specify |page=13. (The prologue is also unpaginated, but the template is able to determine the URL.)
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) of the work quoted from. If using |pages= to quote a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified for the template to determine the act number (I–V) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |act= – in most cases, if the page number is specified the template can determine the act number quoted from. It is unable to do so if page 12 or 54 is specified, in which case this parameter must be used to specify the act number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I.
Act I
pages 1–12
Act II
pages 12–26
Act III
pages 27–39
Act IV
pages 40–54
Act V
pages 54–71

Although the second page of the epilogue is unpaginated, specify it as |page=72.

  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.

Examples

[edit]
  • Wikitext:
    • {{RQ:Otway Souldiers Fortune|page=51|passage=Then pull avvay, hoa up, hoa up, hoa up, ſo '''avaſt''' there, Sir.}} (as the page is specified, the template is able to determine the act number quoted from); or
    • {{RQ:Otway Souldiers Fortune|51|Then pull avvay, hoa up, hoa up, hoa up, ſo '''avaſt''' there, Sir.}}
  • Result:
    • 1681, Thomas Otway, The Souldiers Fortune: A Comedy. [], London: [] R. Bentley and M. Magnes, [], →OCLC, Act IV, page 51:
