Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Thomas Heywood's work Troia Britanica: Or, Great Britaines Troy (1st edition, 1609). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
    Parameter valueResult
DedicationTo the Right Honourable Edward Earle of Worcester, []
    ProemiumProemium
ReadersTo the Two-fold Readers: The Courteous, and the Criticke
As the chapters are unpaginated, use |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/bim_early-english-books-1475-1640_troia-britanica-or-grea_heywood-thomas_1609/page/n2/mode/1up, specify |page=2.
  • |argumentum= – if quoting from one of the two argumenta that appear at the beginning of each canto, specify |argumetum=1 for “Argumentum” and |argumentum=2 for “Arg. 2.”
  • |stanza= – if quoting from a stanza, specify the stanza number quoted from in Arabic numerals. If the number is incorrect, specify the correct one within square brackets; e.g., for stanza 134 or 135 of canto 17, numbered 34 and 133, specify |stanza=[134] and |stanza=[135], respectively.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the number of the canto quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • Page numbers 109124 repeat after page 128; if quoting from one of them, specify the number of this set followed by “A” (from |page=109A to |page=124A). Subsequently, page numbers 123128 repeat; if quoting from one of them, specify the number of this set followed by “B” (from |page=123B to |page=128B).
  • The page numbers indicated in the first column of the following table are incorrect. If quoting from one of them, specify the number indicated in the second column instead. The template encloses it in square brackets.

  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
