Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote from two editions of Joseph Conrad's work Heart of Darkness, the 1st edition (February–April 1899) which appeared in three issues of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, and the 1st collected edition (1902) which appeared in the book Youth: A Narrative: And Two Other Stories. There are differences in the text, so please ensure the correct edition is quoted from.

The template can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

Applicable to the 1st edition (1899)
  • |chapter= or |part= – the chapter or part of the work quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, either |part=I, |part=II, or |part=III. If this parameter is omitted, the template tries to automatically determine the part number from the page number(s) specified.
  • |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting a passage that spans both columns, either specify |columns=1–2 (with an en dash between the numbers) or omit the parameter.
Applicable to the 1st collected edition (1902)
  • |year=mandatory: if quoting from the 1st collected edition (1902), specify |year=1902. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1899).
  • |chapter= or |part=mandatory in one case: if quoting from page 100, use this parameter to specify in uppercase Roman numerals, either |part=I or |part=II, whether part I or II of the work is quoted from, as the template is unable to ascertain this automatically. (In other cases the template can determine the part from the page number.)
Applicable to both editions
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template determine the part of the work quoted from in some cases, and to link to an online version of the work.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
