Talk:zvjezdoznanstvo

@Vorziblix: could you improve the etym? I suppose there's the verb znati in there, or the adjective znan, but I'm not sure. --Barytonesis (talk) 15:10, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Barytonesis: Done, and I’ve marked it as specific to Croatia and translated the quotes. — Vorziblix (talk · contribs) 19:00, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Vorziblix: Hi, I've just noticed the quotes are using the form zvjezdoznastvo. Is it simply a spelling variant? --Barytonesis (talk) 13:26, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Barytonesis: Hm, I’ve never encountered this variant before, and it seems both extremely rare and oddly formed, but apparently it actually is used in the given usage examples. I’d chalk it up to a typo if it weren’t so consistent; as it is, I suppose it probably is a rare variant of an already uncommon word. It looks as though znastvo is used instead of znanstvo in Slovene, so maybe this form is adapted to a transitional dialect? (The usage examples given are standard Serbocroatian, though.) Searching numerous dictionaries yields no mention of this variant. — Vorziblix (talk · contribs) 15:20, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Crom daba, would you know more about this? Per utramque cavernam 00:13, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Per utramque cavernam, I would say that this is a common speech error caused by a long consonant cluster, you can get analogous hits for most words ending with -anstvo.
- Unlike some other cluster simplification phenomena, I haven't seen the distribution of this one described as dialectal, and Google shows it occurring in both Serbian and Croatian. Crom daba (talk) 13:13, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Vorziblix, Crom daba:: Hi. I've another question about this: is it correct to analyse -znanstvo as a suffix? Isn't there a freestanding word znanstvo? Per utramque cavernam 22:06, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
- I am not proficient in the Croatian idiom, but there does seem to exist a standalone word, but it is marginal and seems to mean 'knowledge' rather than 'science' (which is similar-looking znanost). Crom daba (talk) 11:13, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
