Hyphenation vs. IPA

@Metaknowledge, orthographical hyphenation in Portuguese has some differences from the syllable breaks in speech. In this case, the orthgraphy has a hiatus where our pronunciation has a diphthong. Some dictionaries use a different separator to indicate this. Compare rio (/iw/ or /i.u/), fio (/iw/) and chio (/i.u/)

I’m not sure which of these categories ventoinha falls under in European Portuguese. Priberam says it has a hiatus. Maybe @Sarilho1 can help.

@Metaknowledge, Ungoliant MMDCCLXIV I'm not exactly sure I can help much here. I do agree with the assertion that orthographical hyphenation does not necessarily match with the syllable breaks in speech (a more clear example is the word carro, hyphenated as car-ro rather than ca-rro). Infopédia has the IPA /vẽˈtwiɲɐ/ and I would say that's indeed the closest to normal speech, while /vẽ.ˈtu.i.ɲɐ/ is usually only pronounced in extra slow speech. Other examples are moinho or fuinha. As for the spelling "ventoínha", it is indeed incorrect as Ungoliant said (see ventoinha ou ventoínha). - Sarilho1 (talk) 16:16, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
