reefer - person who smokes marijuana (sense)

This sense I have never heard of. If it is to survive it will need cites.--Williamsayers79 10:14, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tagged but not listed. Rfv-sense: "a person who smokes marijuana". I didn't find any relevant hits for "such a reefer", "was a reefer". "is a reefer", "were reefers", "are reefers", "like a reefer", "as a reefer". - -sche (discuss) 15:33, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Etymology 3

[edit]

Couldn't "reefer" (sometimes abbreviaed as reef) just come from Rif (same pronunciation), a Moroccan region where cannabis is a traditional production for local consumption and for export ? There were once many U.S. artists living in Tangiers, in Nortern Morocco, this could be an explanation, they probably knew where their cannabis came from. --Minorities observer (talk) 23:06, 28 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Chambers lists it under the nautical etymology (to reef a sail, i.e. to roll it and tie down a portion): so perhaps it's from the appearance of being a large sheet rolled up. Also speculation. Equinox 23:09, 28 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
