Talk:programmatically

Programmatic is not related to programming at all but is generally misused in this area. Hence, second definition and the second translation should be removed due to misleading/wrong usage.

Referencing some arbitrary book from 2010 does not make the wrong usage correct.

Wiktionary is a descriptive dictionary. This means that we include words and senses that are in use even if they are wrong. The best we can do is add a proscribed or nonstandard label. — Ungoliant ^(falai) 18:51, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Ok, that would be a good start. The reason why I posted this is, that since Wiktionary implies some tying to Wikipedia and in German Wikipedia articles like this would immediately deleted due tu misleading/wrong use of words.. 141.3.89.220 08:12, 9 February 2016 (UTC)MK

I studied a computing degree and worked in the field for about 10 years, and often saw/heard this. It's quite standard. Indeed, the entire first page of a Google Books search only finds the word in this sense. Your comment about "wrong use" is not very meaningful as we are a descriptive dictionary, as Ungoliant said above. Equinox ◑ 15:18, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Okay, last comment from me and sorry that I mistook wiktionary as being a regular kind of dictionary. Unfortunately, computer science people have the great tendency to misuse and redefine existing vocabulary in a way that conflicts with original meanings. This isn't even about descriptive or not. This word as a second definition as it pertains to Computer Science. It's just this simple. English is a dynamic language and definitions change and evolve. You keep saying it's "wrong", but in fact you are wrong and the word has a different definition in the context of computer science. This computer science definition is not new or rare either. Here are a simple "done programmatically", "can be programmatically", and "configured programmatically" Google Scholar searches revealing ACM and IEEE scientific papers using that term in the context of computer science as early as the 1970s. --CyberXRef (talk) 18:49, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
