Powis?

[edit]

Hello @Flackofnubs, @DCDuring, are we sure powis isn't actually the singular? Compare Dutch pauwies, Dutch powies, Sranan Tongo powisi. Appolodorus1 (talk) 12:45, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

The sole cite supports that. Can we find any instances of a definitely singular collocation like "a|one powi(s)"? DCDuring (talk) 13:34, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Note that the other listed nouns in the citation are singular/uncountable (instead of agoutis, labbas etc.) Appolodorus1 (talk) 16:05, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

The Pet Show Day was a veritable menagerie of animals, highlighting the diversity of South Rupununi wildlife. Among the stars of the show were a powis bird, a guinea bird, and turtles[.] Appolodorus1 (talk) 16:07, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

There were three sisters alone in the house, preparing drink; the men-folk were away at a party. Early in the afternoon a young man came along, bringing a powis with him.

During a recent visit to the Zoo, I was happy to see that several of them were on full display and in animated mode. Among the intriguing creatures that call the Zoo home that I took note of as I strolled through the recreational facility were the powis, some macaws, the fascinating harpy eagle, the jaguar, some spider monkeys, Jazz – one of two pumas, and Johnny, the Giant River Otter.
So possibly the singular and plural are both powis? Appolodorus1 (talk) 16:20, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Judging by the image, the last citation also refers to a single powi(s). https://www.kaieteurnewsonline.com/images/2022/07/zoo-3.jpg Appolodorus1 (talk) 16:23, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Great. Until we know for sure that the plural is powis, rather than, say, powises, we could say it was uncertain. Only if we can't find any plural usage would we call it unattested. I'll move it based on the evidence at hand. Thanks. DCDuring (talk) 17:23, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
