Translations for merk in the context of fishing nets:
- Estonian kupp which happens to be a common name for different types of round glass objects, compare w:fishing float.
- Latvian tīkla mērķis (lit. "net goal, aim") before mērķis shifted to the "aim" sense it coincidentally meant marking, etc.
Not sure how stakes relate to glass floats used to mark where the nets are. The word itself in this sense sounds suspiciously similar to pālis from Low German pāl (cf. pole). The "boy" sense might have an unrelated etymology. Neitrāls vārds (talk) 12:14, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
