[edit]This might be a corruption of pajongdrager. As it is quite hard to fan someone with an umbrella, I wonder if it was influenced by a Sarnami descendant of पंखावाला. Appolodorus1 (talk) 16:40, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- I know very little about Dutch morphology, but what about the possibility that it's someone holding/under an umbrella who fans? Chuck Entz (talk) 17:27, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- That's an interesting possibility. Use of this word is limited to Suriname, where pajongs are rarely used. Moreover, so far, I have not come across it in written sources before 1969. My theory would be that it was coined by someone who, subconsciously or not, conflated two images of servility – a servant following their master around with an umbrella and a servant fanning their master.--Appolodorus1 (talk) 20:07, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
