Etymology 3 is based on the WNT, so it's quite all right for now. Logically, it would be more plausible that the relation between the obsolete German überführen ("to oversaturate a market") and Dutch overvoeren is the other way round; namely that the German is a (faulty) calque of the Dutch and this in turn derived from the sense "to overfeed". Regarding the status of the Netherlands as an economic power in early Modernity, this wouldn't be far-fetched either. On the other hand, DWB attests the sense already from the 16th century, WNT only from the 18th. 84.63.31.91 03:00, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
