I'd think from English hostel, leaving out the h under the influence of older òstair*. (Dwelly's 1911 dictionary does have òstair but not ostail.) In fact I've met hostail too but only in a [different] dictionary. You can ask User:Embryomystic though, he might have some source. --Thrissel 22:04, 7 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
