Add topicThoughts from categorizing the derived terms
[edit]Pure vs righteous & upright vs right-angle
[edit]I went through the ~200 derived terms and categorized nearly all of them by sense, and *then* wrote up the definitions. Between the categorizing and the definition writing I lumped these together:
- Upright -> decided it was a special case of right-angle, but for bodies (e.g. orthopnoea, orthograde, orthostasis)
- Pure -> decided to lump it in with righteous. In my initial categorization I differentiated chemically pure (e.g. orthoquartzite, a pure quartz sandstone) from righteous, which to me has a moral connotation.
- Perpendicular -> decided to lump it in with right-angle. I had some idea to differentiate perpendicular planes/etc from lines but once writing it up I decided against it.
For the first two, a reasonable argument could be made to split them back out, and so I have kept their categorization in the derived terms section separate in case somebody decides to split them. Intersets (talk) 23:27, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
- Later on, I had a skim of the second page of derived terms (see below) and I decided it makes sense to separate upright/vertical from right-angle/perpendicular. A human body is considered upright in anatomical location/direction terms if it is standing upright on an incline, but it is not perpendicular to the ground. I added that definition and sense. Unsorted derived terms
[edit]In case anybody wants to finish the task of categorizing the derived terms, here are the ones that I did not categorize that are not just alternate spellings or derived from other terms in the list. (Edit: just realized there is a second page of Category:English terms prefixed with ortho-, so the entries on the second page are also uncategorized!). I couldn't figure out the etymology of Orthopoxvirus or The number in between the term and the definition is what my code for scraping categories produced for numbering the different senses - it starts from 0 rather than 1.
