- Does either sense meet CFI? There's an occasional "Neko girl" (often capitalized): "Suddenly, the Neko girl changed to a cat"[1]. Neko is typically used in the context of animé where people would be likely to write romanized Japanese words. Vox Sciurorum (talk) 16:26, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

- I'll try to put a bunch of links to sources, from a variety of English-speaking websites between here and my signature, that confirm that neko is a unique word in English and DOES NOT mean the same thing as just the romanization of the Japanese 猫.

- this site, https://nekos.life/ , focuses on nekos. My observation is that is made by an English-speaking person. The website serves images that are not similar google search results for "猫" (romanized as "neko").
- the first list item under "see also" here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neko#See_also says that catgirl (not cat, which is what Japanese 猫 (neko, “cat”) means in Japanese) is also known as neko.
- this very nsfw subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/NekoIRL/ shows nekos. These are not cats. They don't match any definition of neko currenly available on Wiktionary.

Here's a snippet from WikiFur's disambiguation page on Neko ( https://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Neko ): > Nekomimi ('猫耳, literally "Cat ears""), also known as Nekomusume (猫娘, "cat daughter") or catgirl, a female human/humanoid with such feline traits as cat ears, tail and whiskers, among others. Often called "neko" in English online. AnotherNeko (talk) 03:19, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
