Phonetic derivation from Middle Chinese

[edit]

I highly doubt whether the phonetics could have had anything to do with a Middle Chinese lemma as suggested by the entry as of now. In Middle and Old Chinese the word 木瓜 (OC *moːɡ kʷraː) invariably referred to something that was not a papaya. I wonder if (modern) Cantonese was a more likely donor language. --Frigoris (talk) 18:08, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Frigoris: Zhuang borrowed from a variety of Pinghua, not Middle Chinese, which is why we don't put "borrowed from Middle Chinese". The reconstructed Middle Chinese pronunciation is enabled just for comparison. RcAlex36 (talk) 18:13, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@RcAlex36:, thanks, that's very interesting. By first sight I thought the timelines got tampered with. ^^ --Frigoris (talk) 18:21, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
