Usage and nuance?
[edit]What's the difference between mező and pálya? Are these ever considered synonyms? In translation, both can apparently be rendered into English as field, albeit with different contexts. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 00:36, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Eirikr They are not synonyms. When their translation is field, mező usually means an open area of flat land with meadows, pastures, while pálya means a place where sports can be played (soccer field, football field). Of course, one could go to a mező to play football but it would not be a professional pálya built for specific sports. The compound words at both entries may provide more insight as to how they are used. Panda10 (talk) 17:18, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
- Would it be accurate then to characterize the key difference here as mező = "natural field, open space", and pálya = "constructed field, pitch"? Is it the "natural" versus "constructed" distinction? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 17:31, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
- Follow-up question: @Panda10, thanks again for your earlier insights. How does the word mezőny fit into this? The definition there is currently just "field (in sports)", which isn't entirely clear: does this mean "pitch, ballfield, physical open and flat area for playing sports"? Or does this mean "area, subject, domain, specific conceptual subset of something"? And in turn, how is mezőny distinct from both mező and pálya? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 22:21, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Eirikr Please see the updated mezőny. Let me know if there are any questions. Panda10 (talk) 18:48, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
