Unbelievably hard to cite this; it's mentioned in a lot of dictionaries as a mid-step between Latin misceo and Old French mesler. Problem is not much writing survives from before 1120 (Le Voyage de Saint Brandon). It does seem to be attested in Old Provençal, possibly Catalan and/or Occitan.
