Etymology?

. I don't think this is surprising; see, for example: matutinus, a Latin adjective for early morning deriving from Proto-Italic *matū-. The divinity cited also likely has an Oscan cognate from the same Proto-Italic root, whereas from the PIE root (*meh₂- (“to ripen, mature”)) we also have māne, etc., and the (rare) Old Latin word mānus (second sense). The conflation of earliness with ripeness/maturity is original to PIE and formed a doublet in Latin, both branches carrying this sense in varying degrees, one providing the French word for morning (matin), and the other giving this word in Spanish.
