Syllabification

[edit]

@TagaSanPedroAko We gotta follow the same standard. Check page 4 here: https://samutsamot.files.wordpress.com/2016/06/syllabication-of-filipino-words.pdf. It's "kab-le". --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 10:03, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@TagaSanPedroAko: Actually if you look at the Manwal sa Masinop na Pagsulat, on p. 12, it does say: "Ikalawa, kapag may magkasunod na katinig sa loob ng isang salita, ang una ay isinasáma sa sinundang patinig at ang ikalawa ay isinasáma sa kasunod na pantig. Halimbawa: /ak•lat/ (aklat),/es•pes•yal/ (espesyal), /pan•sit/ (pansit), /os•pi•tal/ (ospital). Nasasaklaw nitó pati ang mga digrapo, gaya sa /kut•son/ (kutson), /sit•sa•ron/ (sitsaron), /tit•ser/ (titser)."
So, two consonants beside each other is split among the two syllables, so "i-ri-tab-le". --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 10:19, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser The thing here is we got two conflicting hyphenation rules: the 2013 Ortograpiyang Pambansa and the UP Diksiyonaryong Pilipino rules (also observed in KWF Diksiyonaryo). From what I can observe, UP rules attempts to provide exceptions for loanwords where it should be hyphenated following rules of original language, but the 2013 KWF doesn't provide for exceptions unless you got triple cluster. @TagaSanPedroAko: Yup I get that. That's why I said we gotta follow one standard. In my opinion, this hyphenation thing is trivial, no one really goes to a dictionary just to check how the word is syllabified. But regardless, I think we gotta be consistent with one. The only reason we're following the UP one because it's the one that uses KWF rules, since it's KWF that's authoritative, not UP. So if KWF releases revised rules, then we should follow KWF instead, right? --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 10:37, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Agree. TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 10:40, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@TagaSanPedroAko: So we follow instead the 2013 Ortograpiyang Pambansa, the one found in Manwal sa Masinop na Pagsulat, so "i-ri-tab-le". --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 13:13, 20 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser @TagaSanPedroAko Retaining as i-ri-ta-ble.
For which "bl" is a digraph, so the correct syllabification is i-ri-ta-ble.
For kable, also fixed at kwfdiksiyonaryo.ph ka-ble. Ysrael214 (talk) 10:26, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
would mean a massive update to the syllabification of Spanish or English-derived words. That will also mean changing slightly the IPA. TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 10:27, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@TagaSanPedroAko Though the sy, ts digraphs seem to be exceptions idk Ysrael214 (talk) 10:29, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@TagaSanPedroAko Though you don't need to change the IPA module I think, because it's highly dependent if it's borrowed from Spanish. Some slangs' syllabifications are fine. Ysrael214 (talk) 10:32, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
