Etymology
[edit]My understanding is this means Hold On for Dear Life, see [1] and [2]. I will update the entry, I am a first time editor here on wiktionary, so please ping me over at wikipedia if you want to send me a message (in case i dont monitor wiktionary. Thanks Jtbobwaysf (talk) 08:12, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- Very unlikely. Urban Dictionary is random stuff people made up. False backronyms are common. Equinox ◑ 08:15, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- Also, if someone was making up a word in this way, they would probably choose something easy to pronounce. "HODL" looks far more like a typo, as we already explain. Equinox ◑ 08:18, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Equinox It might have originated as a typo, but it is currently being used and has meaning today. Does this entry explain the definition? I came here as this wikipedia entry [3] links to here, in an attempt to explain. But this page does not explain. [4] is a second citation. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 08:21, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

Unfortunately, this term doesn’t look like it meets our criteria — yet. The best I could find were:
- a book (The Bitcoin Guidebook) which arguably uses “HODL” in the imperative (and as a noun)
- an unpublished paper ('Know When to Hodl 'Em, Know When to Fodl 'Em')
- a non-durably-archived paper (Linguistic Study of e-communication in the Bitcoin Community)
- a paper (The Revival of Mining) that has it as part of the proper noun HodlCoin
- some online newspapers (NYT, Huffington Post); it doesn’t look like they are durably archived
Surprisingly, there’s nothing on Usenet. — Ungoliant (falai) 17:35, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

- Hello, hodl is a backronyms. It appears that in the cryptocurrency word it means Hold On For Dear Life according to [5], [6], & [7].
- Equinox (talk • contribs) has claimed it is simply a misspelling. However, the term HODL is widely used in the crypto word, does this allow for another definition? I am new to wiktionary, so apologize in advance if I haven't followed the correct protocol. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 14:36, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
