- My bad. It is used. I think there should be another criterion for words borrowed without changing their forms (if we haven't already had one). Otherwise, we are adding every single foreign term that Vietnamese people use because of a lack of correspondence. Talk about concepts (Ikigai), foods & drinks (hamburger, pizza, cocktail, whiskey, etc.), tools (laptop, smartphone,...), and tons of scientific terms. These are used in newspapers alongside Vietnamese words. Still, I don't think they should be added. Duchuyfootball (talk) 03:35, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- We actually have a policy think tank at WT:Code-switching. It’s indeed hard to draw the line, but this specific entry is fine I think: it’s labeled as only used in the US, and that is an important piece of information: it tells people not to use this word in Vietnam as people probably won’t understand (even if they speak decent English). - Now that has come into light, I think we can add entries for foods & drinks (hamburger, pizza, cocktail, whiskey, etc.), tools (laptop, smartphone,...), and tons of scientific terms. - @Duchuyfootball: Yes, we should have entries about a great many of these adaptations, though only to the extent that they’re attested durably. One reason is that the respellings and pronunciations aren’t totally predictable or standardized. (VASS tried to create a regularized system for their encyclopedia, but it never caught on.) We don’t want totally ad hoc pronunciation spellings, but we also can’t require a word to be thoroughly Vietnamized before acknowledging it.
- For context, I grew up interacting with some extended family members who didn’t speak English or French but still used English and French loanwords liberally, such as phôn. It was a common practice of their generation. This makes it a little more obvious to me when a word has currency beyond code switching, but of course I still look for published attestations instead of asking anyone to trust my recollection.
