Sorry, this edit should not be under this noun fello, but properly belongs under the noun fel, which is already defined. Cannot remember how or why I did this as the line I was turning in Lapide's commentary, Tome X, the Apocalypse, p1181, London 1811. The Latin: Secundo, Aquila fel Attico melle temperatum,...

Second, the gall of the eagle of Attica of sweet temperament, anointed the eyes of the feeble, makes the vision most acute, says Aelian book 1 of the Animals chapter 42.

etymology for Latin sense 'criminal'

@Victar Currently the etymology reads: "one common hypothesis is a borrowing from Frankish *falljō." But this is not a common proposal at all: there is either the reconstruction *fillō, apparently dating from Diez in the 19th century, so might very well be outdated, but then I'm surprised why people keep repeating it. This is intended to be related to Dutch villen, so *fillijan.

Then there has also been a second proposal for a borrowing from Frankish (for example here; but recent works don't seem to mention it), which is a link with German fällen (*fallijan), with reconstruction *fello (acc. *fellon/fellun).

But neither of these links to Old English *fel / Old Norse fæla, or reconstructs *falljō (although one can propose that as ancestor in the second proposal), let alone that the TLF (currently given as reference) would do this.

I will in any case add a third hypothesis (it being from the verb in etymology 1), with a reference. Seems perfectly plausible actually. Exarchus (talk) 22:27, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

One objection to the last hypothesis might be that the vocative of the noun is the same as the first person singular of the verb. And that's not what you wanted to say... Exarchus (talk) 22:36, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
