Conflicting descriptions
[edit]William Kelly in an 1884 letter gives the enfield's description as:
- " […] having the head of a fox, the breast feathered as an eagle's, the foreclaws also of an eagle, the remainder of the body that of a wolf"[1]
a paragraph down he quotes a Mr.Kelly whose family crest contains an enfield:
- "The crest is an Enfield vert, an animal peculiar to our family with the forepart of a griffin and the hind quarter of a wolf dog."
A conflicing desciption of the same crest is given by a Mr.Bone as:
- the head of a fox, the chest [query, the trunk ?] of an elephant, the mane of a horse, the fore legs of an eagle, the body and hind legs of a greyhound, and the tail of a lion.[2]
And in A Complete Guide to Heraldry is described as:
- having the head of a fox, chest of a greyhound, talons of an eagle, body of a lion, and hind legs and tail of a wolf.
