A "vowel digraph or ligature" sense would be citeable, but "vowel ligature" specifically is trickier. Consider, for example:

  And he might have written the name, also, with the diphthong æ, as well as the single vowel, in the initial syllable, throughout all the preceding forms.

here it happens to be referring to a vowel ligature, but it's being contrasted with single vowel, which leads me to suspect that the writer thinks of <æ> as a digraph.
