Có Vietnamese etymology potentially extension of 固?
[edit]The entry for 固 says it can be used in literary terms to denote "no doubt" or "certainly".
Vietnamese already extends the use of 空(empty; hollow; void)as a negator. It doesn't sound impossible that the same could have been applied for 固 to suggest "to have" or "yes". Vien.Vu1 (talk) 08:05, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nope, in Kri, the instrumental infixed form of this root means "house" (krnooq [krnɔːʔ] < kooq [kɔːʔ]), suggesting that some shape of meanings along the line of "to exist", "to live" or "to be at" might be extant at Proto-Vietic stage. As always, 固 (MC kuH) is just a phonogram. Chinese 阿羅漢 / 阿罗汉 (āluóhàn, “arhat”) (< Pali arahant) technically consists of three phonograms that represent sounds, yet I don't think it's a coincidence that 漢 (MC xanH, “man”) (> 好漢 / 好汉 (hǎohàn, “great man, brave man”)) was chosen to write the word for "one who has achieved Nirvana" from Pali. Scriptors have always liked to match and reference meanings of things, even when there isn't anything of substance. PhanAnh123 (talk) 10:24, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
