Bogdan, I conferred with some Romanians, and it is well-known that the Basques are associated with this beret style; the DEX is surely right in this case: the Romanian word is from French. The Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian and Albanian words are homonyms with different meanings and a different etymology. Maybe if you have a reference at least, but even in that case I would not believe it. The French etymology from basque is even indicated by the Romanian variant, basc (which also means Basque in Romanian). Alexander 007 21:22, 27 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

It is a devilish coincidence however, because Basque berets were originally made of wool and berets these days are usually made of wool felt :-) Alexander 007 21:26, 27 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
