Etymology

Apparently it's "black ploughman" (schwarze Negger), but I'll leave the proper research to somebody who remembers more than about 20 words of German. Equinox ◑ 00:30, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

I've looked for etymological info several times before. My sources don't list that specific name, but from what I do find in Bahlow's Deutsches Namenlexikon, the surname could also originate either as "son of black Eggert" or as "person from black Egg(e)" (where Egg(e) is a place name). I don't find Negger as a word in modern or 19th century German dictionaries. It doesn't appear as a surname with that meaning in medieval German either. I do find Neger (from Latin niger), which suggests that Schwarzenegger may be the German equivalent of blackamoor. --EncycloPetey 00:39, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

It's der schwarze Egger or ein schwarzer Egger, not Negger, he-he. The verb is eggen - to harrow. "-n-" is the connecting consonant. --Anatoli ^{(обсудить)} 23:45, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
