Maire > Muire

[edit]

Does anyone know if this a>u is a regular sound change? I can't think of another compelling example, but there is a counterexample, "aire", where the "a" is in a similar environment. If this isn't a regular development, has anyone considered the possibility of influence from the name "Muirne" (mother of Fionn mac Cumhaill)? Cernacas (talk) 22:56, 29 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

I suspect influence from muir (sea), because of Mary's title Star of the Sea, itself due in part to the etymologically false association of Hebrew מִרְיָם (miryām) with יָם (yām, sea). —Mahāgaja · talk 12:27, 29 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
