Etymology

[edit]

This river name is actually a little puzzling. The current etymology is, of course, quite convincing, yet the tên chữ (𤅷江 Linh giang) is suggestive of a complex onset. I've seen another potential candidate based on this: tranh/gianh (thatchgrass). But as we know, *p/b-l- > ɓl > ‹gi-› only occured in the Northern dialects, most extensively in the inland ones, but that is not where the Gianh River locates.
