Character choice

@Justinrleung Hi, just wondering, why you picked 杯. I feel like it's better to differentiate it from a "glass" meaning, and use the character 𤖯. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 14:39, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

@Mar vin kaiser: 杯 is much more common than 𤖯 for this word. It's used in 福州方言詞典. 杯 is also the usual character used in Mandarin, for example 筊杯, 聖杯, 杯珓. — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 14:25, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

@Justinrleung: But isn't 杯 more restricted to the connotation of "cup" or "vessel"? I was gonna make an entry of "球桮" or "球𤖯", meaning "ball". It's just weird to write "球杯", because a "ball" is so far from a "cup". --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 14:32, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

@Mar vin kaiser: Also check out this discussion. I don't agree with their analysis for 跋 (cf. Hakka 跌筊), but their analysis for 杯 makes sense. I don't think poe is necessarily the same word as 桮 in 球桮. An additional piece of evidence against 桮 in 球桮 being the same word as 杯 in 跋杯 is that 桮 in 球桮 is pe in Zhangzhou, but 杯 in 跋杯 is poe. — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 15:05, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
