[edit]The Japanese word 格好いい (kakkoii) means manly beauty or impressiveness. When describing a person, handsome or good-looking work fine. In other cases, it’s usually translated as cool, but this sense of cool seems to be rather dated in English. かっこいい音楽 is usually translated as cool music, but it’s different from the original Japanese, which often means heavy music and rarely soft songs or ballads. It seems to me badass is the closest English word, but its register doesn’t match; かっこいい is not at all vulgar, and can be used in any situation. Is there any good English translation for it? - @TAKASUGI Shinji: Cool, awesome, groovy, neat, terrific; stylish? --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 23:04, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. The problem is that my translation of かっこいい as cool caused misunderstanding (about the most kakkoii rock band on Reddit, by the way), as cool doesn’t give you an idea of manliness or intensity anymore. How would you describe a “badass” band or a “badass” song in a formal way? — TAKASUGI Shinji (talk) 23:28, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- @TAKASUGI Shinji: There's probably no exact equivalent but "tough" is used to describe manliness in a positive way. Otherwise, "impressive" or similar may work. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 00:14, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
