hide_pron
[edit]@Justinrleung Because 擁 has two different standard pronunciations in Mainland and Taiwan, and Compounds section only shows one. I think it would be better to remain neutral, so I used hide_pron. Dokurrat (talk) 05:41, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Dokurrat: That's the way
{{zh-l}}
and related templates work. It's not ideal, but I don't think we need to hide the pronunciations altogether. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 05:44, 27 August 2018 (UTC)- @Justinrleung: I think favoring Mainland pronunciation for no reason is worse than hiding the pronunciations altogether. It's partiality, right? Dokurrat (talk) 05:49, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Dokurrat: Yes indeed I support you. It would be fair to be impartial in this case. KevinUp (talk) 05:56, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Dokurrat, KevinUp: Then isn't favouring Mandarin over other lects also partiality? It's a limitation of the templates that we have to live with unless you have a better solution than removing the pronunciation altogether, which reduces usability. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 06:21, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Yes, it is. That's why I used tr=- when using zh-l when I was a newbie here. Dokurrat (talk) 06:28, 27 August 2018 (UTC)That's another topic; I needn't to reply that. Dokurrat (talk) 14:29, 9 January 2019 (UTC)- There you go again, since Indians can't agree on a national language, which is Indian, let's all switch to English, LOL. A default pronunciation is better than no pronunciation. Favouring the standard Chinese is an obvious choice for any Chinese learner. No discrimination here. --Anatoli T. - @Wyang Any thoughts about this? My recent edit was a temporary fix to this issue. KevinUp (talk) 11:25, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @KevinUp: I don't endorse any kind of mass manual pronunciation input, which is basically against what we have been trying to do over the years (reduce the amount of reduplication within and across entries by improving the technical infrastructure). Most of the readers of English Wiktionary are not native speakers of Chinese- so having some pronunciation info is better than none. Unless we use popups (which I would be in favour of), it is impossible to maintain neutrality if we want to give some pronunciation preview for the links. Wyang (talk) 11:30, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Wyang: Thanks for the explanation. I hope the infrastructure for
{{zh-l}}
could be further improved to display variant pronunciations based on Module:zh/data/cmn-tag when indicated by the user. KevinUp (talk) 11:38, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
