Teochew tone

@Justinrleung: I guess it sounded like 1 to me, but perhaps it can be tough. I know Teochew tone 1 and 5 sound very similar except that 5 has a higher pitch. If you're absolutely sure it's tone 5, the 的士 will probably be the right character to choose. The dog2 (talk) 02:39, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

@The dog2: Okay, I found it in 新加坡潮州话的外语借词和特殊词语, which writes it as 德时 and gives the pronunciation dêg4 si5 (in IPA), so I was right. I don't know if we should make a new entry just for Teochew or just use this entry. — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 02:51, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

@The dog2: I mean, tone 5 for 士 in Hokkien is also irregular. I just checked 马来西亚的三个汉语方言 by 陈晓锦, and she writes the word in JB Teochew as 的士 and gives the pronunciation dêh4 si5 (in IPA). — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 03:05, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

@Justinrleung: 德士 should definitely be the one for Mandarin. That's what we learn in school, and what you will see in the newspapers and official government documents. But I guess 的士 is fine for the dialectal terms. The dog2 (talk) 03:57, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
