@Justinrleung Hmm my impression is the same as Mteechan's (哪 being a short form of 哪裡). It seems the meanings of 哪 in Min Nan and Mandarin are not entirely the same - in Mandarin 我哪知道？ is "How (the hell) do I know?!" and in Min Nan more of a genuine question. @Wyang I don't think it's necessarily a genuine question in Min Nan. It's more often used in rhetorical questions. Some examples:

• 愛拚才會贏: 哪通失去希望 每日醉茫茫
• 成功的條件: 哪有一步就登天遮好的代誌
• 隨風離開愛的人: 心情茫茫渺渺付出青春哪會遮爾重
• 無眠: 今仔日月娘哪遐爾光

@Wyang Also, in Standard Mandarin, it might be short for 哪裡 when meaning "where", but it's also used in other lects, such as Taishanese and Hakka. I'm not sure how to incorporate this into the definitions. — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 07:48, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

@Justinrleung I think the first sense should be split into various senses; synchronically it may be viewed as the contraction of 哪裡 in those uses, but it is likely that diachronically 哪 is just an uncompounded form of 哪裡, developing separately. These pronouns and particles are quite hard to define, but are probably some of the most important words for readers. :( Wyang (talk) 07:53, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
