Not noteworthy by itself IMO. カメラ is already the established transcription of Eng. camera, and any deviation from that would be weird.

In the same way that light novel#English "matches" ライト+ノベル to light+novel instead of producing *raito noberu, カムコーダー#Japanese could be a match of camera+recorder to カメラ+レコーダー instead of producing *キャムコーダー.

@Fish bowl: There appears to be a strong propensity for interpreting the English /kæ/ sound as キャ rather than カ. Compare カラメル (karameru) from French caramel versus キャラメル (kyarameru) from English caramel. My intended point in the etym wording was that a borrowing of camcorder from English into Japanese would have borrowed the cam as キャム, not as カム. If that was unclear, I'm certainly open to that text being edited.

If instead the Japanese term カムコーダー is traceable to the Japanese term カメラ, that would seem to be additional evidence that this was not borrowed from English, no? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 11:31, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

Ya, those all look like coinages in Japanese using whole terms already extant in Japanese.

• ライトノベル (raito noberu) = ライト (from English light) + ノベル (from English novel)
• シュークリーム (shū kurīmu) = シュー (from French chou, or possibly even English chou as in choux pastry) + クリーム (from English cream)
• カラーテーマ (karā tēma) = カラー (from English color) + テーマ (from German Thema)

Meanwhile, カムコーダー doesn't contain whole terms. That said, the phonology points to a derivation from whole terms カメラ (kamera) + レコーダー (rekōdā). No? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 22:48, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
