- @AryamanA: I supposed that connection too; however I found nothing. I would throw a wild guess that when Latin Germānia or English Germany was imported into Sanskrit, it was altered to शर्मण्य (śarmaṇya), an already existing word, to make it more Sanskrit-sounding. It would be interesting if the name was intended to mean "the country that shelters" or something like that but nowhere is anything like that discussed. -- माधवपंडित (talk) 07:27, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
