Etymology

[edit]

While it *is* remarkable how similar the reconstructed Proto Dravidian term for bamboo is to this Sanskrit term, one has to bear in mind that वेतस (vetasa) has a solid Indo-European etymology and Saskritists (Lubotsky, Mayrhofer, Monier Williams) are confident that the term वेत्र (vetra) is related to वेतस (vetasa); whether it is a later formation from वेतस (vetasa) or directly inherited from Proto-Indo-European, one can be certain that it is not a Dravidian borrowing. At best the semantics may have been altered so that the term refers to a plant that grows in India. DED, which had been cited made no claim of any Sanskrit borrowing. Perhaps the Parji terms are borrowings. If it seems far fetched for Parji to borrow terms from Sanskrit, then this might have been a Sanskrit borrowing into Proto Dravidian - there are quite a few of them. -- 𝘗𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘺𝘪(𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬) 04:57, 13 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
