Labio-dental or labio-velar?

[edit]

Given the sourced statement in the Wikipedia article 'Sanskrit grammar' that "In the earlier language, व was pronounced as the labio-velar approximant [w], but it later developed into a labio-dental sound.", shouldn't the transcriptions on Wiktionary have a [w] at least for the Vedic version?--95.42.25.28 15:40, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Actually an interesting question, but it's not fully clear to me when the change from [w] to [ʋ] happened.
Whitney gives: "the Paninean scheme and two of the Prātiçākhyas (VPr. and TPr.) distinctly define the sound as made between the upper teeth and the lower lip — which, of course, identifies it with the ordinarily modern v-sound." Exarchus (talk) 14:58, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
