@Aryamanarora A long while back I was reading a book on foreign influences on Sanskrit, and it was said that this word was borrowed into Sanskrit from the Ancient Greek διάμετρος (or a similar term). I don't know how old the word is though so I can't truly say. DerekWinters (talk) 18:19, 4 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@DerekWinters: I don't think this word existed in Sanskrit. Sanskrit did borrow जामित्र (jāmitra) from Greek διάμετρος though, you might be thinking of that. I think this is one of the rare examples of phono-semantic matching in Hindi. —Aryaman (मुझसे बात करो) 02:17, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Aryamanarora: Wait that's exactly what I was thinking of. Nevermind. DerekWinters (talk) 02:19, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@DerekWinters: It could be possible that it was based on जामित्र, but the dictionaries I've checked say the word is from English. —Aryaman (मुझसे बात करो) 02:21, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
No, you're certainly right on this one. My bad. DerekWinters (talk) 02:22, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
