Directly from Hebrew or translated through Greek?

[edit]

Concerning the etymology. Myrnamyers (talk) 04:02, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

This term doesn't occur in Biblical Hebrew- it was introduced in the Christian scriptures. The closest I could find was a reference to "your holy spirit", but that was in effect saying "your spirit, which is holy". The concept of "the Holy Spirit" as an separate entity is a Christian one, and thus originally expressed in Ancient Greek. The similarity of the Arabic term to how it would be expressed in Hebrew is due to the fact that the two languages are related, so the words used in the Arabic and in the Hebrew are cognates of each other.
